TruLittle Inspirational Hero
Fourlanesend School is located on the coast in the south east of Cornwall. Our children are very aware of plastic pollution and the damage to the local environment. As a school, we have been doing our best to reduce single use plastic. In December 2017, Noah raised the concern about single use plastic red noses at a school council meeting. We agreed we should take a stand against them. Unfortunately, 2018 was Sports Relief. However, the children remembered Noah’s idea and in January 2019 they wrote an open letter to Comic Relief voicing their concerns about the single use plastic red noses. They explained how they were going to make alternative noses that were recyclable to raise money for Comic Relief instead. A copy of the letter was sent to Sir David Attenborough; he replied saying we were perfectly correct to raise the question of replacing plastic products wherever we can.
The school received much publicity about their campaign to ask Comic Relief to consider changing single use plastic red noses.
In September 2020 the school were contacted by Comic Relief asking them to be part of the launch of the new red nose which is 100% plastic-free and plant-based. The children were featured on a vast array of media coverage including the news, breakfast television and Newsround. The children are so proud of their achievement; an idea that came from them has made such a large change and positive impact across our nation.
